Abstract

This study aims to analyze the diction of fear in Surah Ali-‘Imrān by focusing on three main words (khauf, khasyyah, and ru’b) and to reveal how the variations in their meaning are understood through two major linguistic paradigms, namely synonymy and asynonymy. This study is important because the differences in diction in the Qur'an are not only lexical, but also contain theological, psychological, and rhetorical messages that influence the overall meaning of the verse. This research method uses qualitative research. The data collection technique uses documentation techniques, namely the process of searching for information related to the research topic through notes, transcripts, books, journal articles and other sources. The data analysis technique uses content analysis. The research findings show that khauf, khasyyah, and ru’b have basic meanings that overlap as "fear", but each contains a clear semantic differentiation. Khauf relates to potential threats and physical-psychological fear, khasyyah is a spiritual fear born of knowledge and glorification, while ru’b describes a traumatic fear that arises as a divine intervention against the enemy. The study of the related verses shows that the diction is chosen precisely and cannot be exchanged without changing the structure of the verse's message. This research has implications for strengthening the study of Qur'anic semantics, especially in explaining how the Qur'an constructs the psychology of fear through different levels of meaning, as well as contributing to the development of a context-based lexical analysis methodology in tafsir studies. The originality of this research lies in its integrative approach that combines two often-contested linguistic paradigms, namely synonymy and asynonymy and the direct application of Bintu Syathi's asynonymy theory to the vocabulary map of fear in a particular surah. This research offers added value in the form of a more detailed and argumentative semantic mapping regarding the differences in the functions of khauf, khasyyah, and ru’b, which has not been widely done in previous studies.
