Abstract

Sabar (patience) is among the most frequently repeated ethical-spiritual concepts in the Qur’an, yet prior research has examined it mainly through theological, psychological, and pedagogical lenses while treating its meaning as a stable, universal given. What remains underexamined is how this meaning travels and is reshaped when transmitted through local-language tafsir, particularly within the Sundanese tradition. This study addresses that gap by examining the vernacularization of sabar in Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 155–157 as interpreted in Kitabul Mubin, a Sundanese tafsir composed by Muhammad Romli around the 1970s. It aims to identify and analyze how diction and narrative in Romli’s interpretation vernacularize the Qur’anic message of sabar without severing its theological continuity, using Anthony H. Johns’ theory of vernacularization, operationalized into two derivative categories, as the analytical framework. A qualitative-descriptive library research method was applied through textual analysis of Romli’s commentary on the three verses, supported by Sundanese lexicography and comparison with related Sundanese tafsir scholarship. The findings show that Kitabul Mubin vernacularizes diction through terms such as kasieun, warangsul ka Mantenna, kagungan Alloh, and pangampura, each embedding the hierarchical-ethical values of the Sundanese undak-usuk basa system, while vernacularizing narrative by situating the Qur’anic trials within the socio-economic experience of agrarian Sundanese society. The study concludes that Kitabul Mubin functions not as a literal translation but as an active local articulation that grounds the Qur’anic ethics of sabar within Sundanese linguistic hierarchy and cultural wisdom, while preserving its core theological meaning, thereby extending the application of Johns’ framework from juridical and narrative materials to affective-ethical Qur’anic concepts.
