Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of materialism and worldly orientation in QS. Ali Imran: 14-15 as interpreted by K.H. Muhammad Romli in Tafsir Sunda Kitabul Mubin, employing Fazlur Rahman’s double movement hermeneutics as the primary analytical framework. Using qualitative library research, the study applies Rahman’s two-movement structure. The first movement reconstructs the socio-historical context of the revelation, identifying that QS. Ali Imran: 14-15 responded to the attitude of attachment to worldly goods among Arabs, Jews, and Christians in the early Islamic period, and extracting three universal moral ideals: recognition of human material nature (fitrah), the principle of value hierarchy placing divine pleasure (ridha Allah) above worldly goods, and the principle of moderation (wasathiyah) in life orientation. The second movement brings these moral ideals into dialogue with Romli’s local Sundanese interpretation and contemporary phenomena of materialism. The findings demonstrate that Kitabul Mubin’s four interpretive dimensions fitrah, balance, warning against excess, and spiritual solution onstitute an organic local actualization of Rahman’s universal moral ideals, expressed through Sundanese metaphors and vernacular language. Applied to the contemporary context, these ideals provide normative standards for responding to consumerism, hedonism, digital display culture, FOMO, and consumptive debt. This study contributes to the discourse on contextual Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia by showing that local Nusantara tafsir traditions already embody the spirit of the double movement, warranting systematic reading through contemporary hermeneutical frameworks.
