Abstract

The Qur'an is not merely studied as a holy scripture but is also internalized and practiced in the daily lives of Muslims. This phenomenon is examined through the Living Qur'an approach. One manifestation of this is the tradition of reciting Ayatul Hirzi at the Miftahul 'Ulum Balekambang Islamic Boarding School in West Bandung Regency; the recitation takes place after the dawn (Subuh) prayer as an act of seeking God's protection and attaining inner peace. As this tradition has not previously been specifically researched, it warrants scholarly attention. This study aims to describe the practice of the Ayatul Hirzi recitation tradition, analyze its spiritual and social functions, and uncover the meaning of the tradition based on the students' experiences. A qualitative approach utilizing phenomenology was employed. Data were gathered through participant observation, in-depth interviews with five informants, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using Hans Robert Jauss's reception theory integrated with the phenomenological perspectives of Husserl and Moustakas. The results indicate that the tradition is performed communally after the dawn prayer and serves spiritual, psychological, and social functions: fostering faith in God's protection, providing inner peace and facilitating Qur'an memorization, and strengthening the bonds of brotherhood among the students. Although viewed as a routine, the students experience a sense of unease if they miss it. These findings demonstrate that the recitation of Ayatul Hirzi has become a spiritual habit deeply integrated into the students' lives, thereby enriching Living Qur'an studies regarding Qur'anic reception within the Islamic boarding school environment.
