Managing Sadness in the Qur'an: A Study of al-Farmāwī's Mawḍūʿī Exegesis
Keywords:

Sadness is an important emotion that humans naturally experience. However, sadness often has negative impacts on mental, social, and spiritual aspects. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of Qur’anic verses on managing sad emotions and explore their relevance in modern life. This research employs a qualitative approach using the maudhū‘ī (thematic) interpretation method. Data were collected through systematic study of Qur’anic exegetical sources and relevant psychological literature. The results show that verses about sadness are more often found in Makkīyah surahs, which emphasize individual strength in facing sadness due to rejection and oppression. Madaniyyah verses, in contrast, are more collective and emphasize social strengthening in defending religion. The forms of emotional management of sadness in the Qur’an include: (1) displacement, in the form of catharsis and dhikrullāh; (2) cognitive adjustment, in the form of positive attribution (ḥusnuẓann); and (3) coping, in the form of patience and gratitude, forgiveness, and adaptation-adjustment. These findings suggest that the Qur’an offers a comprehensive framework for emotional regulation that remains relevant to contemporary psychological contexts.
