Digital Al-Qur’an Literacy: A Tafsir Analysis of Verse Meaning Distortion on Social Media

This article examines the widespread practice of copying and pasting Al-Qur'an verses on social media, which is frequently accompanied by a separation of context and results in semantic distortion. The primary issue lies in the tendency of digital users to quote verses partially without paying attention to asbāb al-nuzūl (historical contexts of revelation), munāsabah (intertextual correlations), and the thematic coherence of the surah, thereby generating reductive and even ideological meanings. This study employs a qualitative method based on literature research with a thematic exegesis (mauḍūʿī) approach and digital discourse analysis. Three concrete cases are examined comparatively: Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]:191, Q.S. al-Māʾidah [5]: 51, and Q.S. al-Ḥujurāt [49]: 12 to demonstrate how the decontextualization of siyāq (textual context) shifts the meaning from normative-universal messages to the legitimation of particular interests. This study offers the concept of Al-Qur'an Digital Literacy as an integrative framework of three pillars: technical-verificative competence, hermeneutical-contextual competence, and ethical-theological competence. The findings indicate that without this literacy framework, the digital ecosystem will continue to produce a state of "interpretative anarchy" that threatens the authority of exegesis methodology. Recommendations are directed toward the integration of a digital-tafsir curriculum in Islamic educational institutions, the role of religious organizations in producing counter-narratives of tafsir, and the implementation of context verification features by digital platforms.
