Quraish Sihab’s Methodology of Interpretation in Tafsir al-Misbah from the Perspective of al-Suyuti

The Al-Misbah interpretation by M. Quraish Shihab is one of Indonesia's influential contemporary interpretations, but scientific studies examining its methodology through the perspective of classical interpretation methodology, especially the views of Imam Jalaluddin as-Suyuthi in Al-Itqan fi ‘Ulum Al-Qur’an, are still relatively limited. This study aims to explore and explain Quraish Shihab's interpretation methodology in the tafsir based on as-Suyuthi's methodological concepts. The research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods and content analysis. The primary data sources consist of Tafsir Al-Misbah (15 volumes) and Al-Itqan fi 'Ulum Al-Qur’an, while the secondary sources are classical and contemporary tafsir literature and academic research results. Data was obtained through documentary studies and analyzed through the stages of inventory, classification, and interpretation. The results of the study show that Al-Misbah has a strong methodological relationship with the classical tafsir tradition formulated by as-Suyuthi. Quraish Shihab's interpretation combines bi al-ma'tsur and bi al-ra'yi sources with a more dominant tendency towards bi al-ra'yi, using tahlili and maudhu'i methods, and has adabi al-ijtima'i, 'ilmi, lughawi, and bi al-ra'yi styles. Harmony with as-Suyuthi's principles is evident through his mastery of Arabic, his diligence in exploring the meaning of verses, his attention to asbab al-nuzul and historical context, his explanation of munasabah, and his use of a rational-contextual approach that remains based on history. This study concludes that Quraish Shihab's methodology in Al-Misbah is able to adapt classical methods to suit current needs without losing its scientific nature. Therefore, this study recommends that Islamic educational institutions integrate the study of classical and contemporary tafsir methodologies into the curriculum to enrich the tafsir heritage in Indonesia.
