Abstract

The study of Living Qur'an has become an increasingly relevant approach to understand how the Qur'an functions as a living practice through recitation (tilawah), melodic art (nagham), and spiritual appreciation, particularly through Ahmad Rafiq's reception framework that distinguishes aesthetic, functional, and exegetical dimensions. The Unit Pengembangan Tilawatil Qur'an (UPTQ) at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung is a student organization that has intensively cultivated the practice of tilawah since 1991, yet the subjective experiences and forms of reception among its qori and qori'ah have not been deeply studied, especially within the context of campus-based student organizations. This study aims to describe and analyze the forms of reception held by qori and qori'ah toward the practice of Qur'anic recitation at UPTQ UIN Bandung, and to uncover how the tradition of tilawah contributes to the formation of Qur'anic personal character among students. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with six purposively selected informants active qori and qori'ah with a minimum of one year of active membership alongside limited participatory observation at Masjid Iqomah, Campus 1, UIN Bandung. Data analysis used an interpretive phenomenological analysis model drawing on Rafiq's reception typology (2014, 2021) and Ahimsa-Putra's phenomenological perspective (2012). The findings reveal that the reception of UPTQ's qori and qori'ah is plural and layered. The aesthetic dimension holds the most dominant position as the primary driver, where the beauty of recitation is experienced as a fusion of technical precision, mastery of nagham, and spiritual appreciation of verse meanings. The functional dimension manifests through individual and collective preparation rituals reflecting the belief that tilawah requires both physical and spiritual purity. The social-communal dimension is realized through UPTQ's role as a space for dakwah, kinship, and inter-campus networking. The exegetical dimension grows organically as a secondary outcome of the intensity of aesthetic practice. These findings confirm that UPTQ functions as a comprehensive campus-based Living Qur'an institution.
