Abstract

This article examines the educational da’wah method embedded in Tafsir Nurul Bajan, a Sundanese-language Qur’anic commentary written by K.H. Muhammad Romli and H.N.S. Midjaja and first published in 1960. Although the work has already been widely studied from the perspectives of linguistic vernacularization and Sundanese cultural nuance, a focused examination of how its local wisdom operates as an educational da’wah method has not yet been undertaken. This study aims to describe the profile and local characteristics of Tafsir Nurul Bajan and to analyze how Sundanese local wisdom functions as a model of contextual da’wah for contemporary Sundanese society. A qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach is employed through library research on the primary text of Tafsir Nurul Bajan together with secondary academic literature. The findings show that Tafsir Nurul Bajan applies an adaptive and contextual educational da’wah method. Its local character is expressed through undak-usuk basa as a form of theological courtesy, agrarian cultural analogies that render transcendental Qur’anic concepts intelligible, and the integration of Sundanese life philosophies such as silih asih, silih asah, silih asuh and hade ku omongan, goreng ku lampah, reinforced by the usul fiqh principle of al-‘adah muhakkamah. Rather than merely translating the sacred text, the tafsir constitutes a portrait of inclusive and persuasive wasathiyah da’wah that responds to the moral challenges of modern Sundanese society. This study contributes a methodological reading that positions local-language tafsir as a living instrument of religious education.
